Getting a driving licence in Bangalore involves a clear process that is straightforward once you know the steps. Many people find the RTO process confusing because the requirements and procedures are not widely explained in simple language. This guide walks you through the entire process from learner's licence to permanent licence, so you know exactly what to do at each stage.
Step 1: Apply for a Learner's Licence
The first step is obtaining a learner's licence (LL). You can apply online through the Parivahan Sewa portal (parivahan.gov.in) or visit your nearest RTO office. You will need proof of age (birth certificate, Aadhaar, or passport), proof of address, passport-size photographs, and a filled application form (Form 1 and Form 2). Pay the required fee and complete the online theory test at the RTO. The test covers basic traffic rules and road signs.
Step 2: Receive Your Learner's Licence
Once you pass the theory test, your learner's licence is issued. This is a temporary licence valid for 6 months that allows you to practise driving on roads, provided a licensed adult is seated beside you. Your learner's licence number is what you use when booking your driving school sessions.
Step 3: Complete Your Driving Training
You must complete a minimum number of driving lessons before you are eligible to apply for the permanent licence. At Infinity Driving School, we ensure all students meet this requirement and are fully prepared — not just technically eligible — before they apply for the test. Enrol in a structured programme that covers both simulator sessions and on-road driving.
Step 4: Apply for the Permanent Driving Licence Test
After a minimum of 30 days from the issue of your learner's licence, you can apply for the permanent driving licence (DL) test. Apply again through the Parivahan portal or at the RTO. Select your preferred test slot, pay the fee, and confirm the appointment. Your driving school will assist you with this process and ensure all documents are in order.
Step 5: Appear for the Practical Driving Test
On your test day, arrive at the RTO with your learner's licence, application form (Form 9), photographs, and any other documents specified by the RTO. The practical test is conducted on the RTO premises or on a designated test route. The examiner evaluates your ability to handle the vehicle safely, follow traffic rules, and demonstrate control. Pass the test and your permanent licence is approved.
Step 6: Receive Your Permanent Driving Licence
After passing the test, your driving licence is processed and dispatched to your registered address by post within 7 to 21 working days. You can track the status online through the Parivahan portal using your application number. Once received, your licence is valid for 20 years or until you turn 50, whichever is earlier — after which it must be renewed.
Important RTO Offices in Bangalore
Bangalore has multiple RTO offices serving different zones — Koramangala, Rajajinagar, Hebbal, and more. Ensure you apply at the RTO corresponding to your residential address. Your driving school will confirm the correct office for your area and help you navigate the process smoothly.
